French


 

The French Language Program emphasizes audio-lingual skills cognitive aspects of second language acquisition and the development of a sensitivity to the cultures of French Canada and other French-speaking regions. Students will become familiar with the customs, geography, history and institutions of those people. Throughout the program, students will have many opportunities to communicate in French through realistic and personalized situations and activities.

Grade 7 French

This course enables students to develop a range of essential skills in reading, writing and oral language, including a foundation in spelling and grammar. Students will listen to and talk about short oral texts in structured and open-ended situations; read a variety of classroom and simple authentic materials (200 to 400 words); communicate information and ideas in writing; and identify and use the vocabulary and the grammar and language conventions appropriate for the Grade 7 level.

Grade 8 French

This course enables students to develop a range of essential skills in reading, writing and oral language, including a foundation in spelling and grammar. Students will listen to and talk about simple oral texts; express ideas feelings and opinions in conversations and discussions using learned language structures; read a variety of simple authentic materials (400 to 600 words); write a variety of forms adjusting language to suit the reader; and identify the use of vocabulary grammar and language conventions appropriate for the grade 8 level.

FSF1D1 French Grade 9 Academic

This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading and writing skills. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as relationships, social trends and careers. Thematic readings which include a selection of short stories articles and poems will serve as stepping stones to oral and written activities.

FSF1P1 French Grade 9 Applied

This course emphasizes the concurrent development of oral communication, reading and writing skills using a broad-based theme such as the media. Students will enhance their ability to understand and speak French through conversations, discussions and presentations. They will also read short stories, articles, poems and songs and write brief descriptions, letters, dialogues and invitations.

FSF2D1 French Grade 10 Academic

This course enables students to increase their knowledge of the French language, further develop their language skills and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world. Exploring a variety of themes, students will develop and apply critical thinking skills in discussion in their analysis and interpretation of texts and in their own writing. RMC Requirement: Grade 9 French or equivalent.

FSF3U1 Core French Grade 11 (University Preparation)

This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of reading and writing skills and to reinforce oral communication skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of French-speaking cultures in Canada and around the world through their reading of a variety of materials, including a short novel or a play. Students will produce various written assignments including a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course. Rockway students interested in our France / Germany Exchange must successfully complete this credit course. MET Prerequisite: French Grade 10 Academic.

FSF4U1 Core French Grade 12 (University Preparation)

This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of French-language skills. Students will consolidate their oral skills as they discuss literature, culture and current issues. They will read a variety of texts and will write a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course. MET Prerequisite: Core French Grade 11 University Preparation.
