Student Services


Making plans for the future needs to be balanced with living in the present. Student Services works to assist Rockway students with this process.

Course selection counselling helps students navigate the complexities of diploma requirements compulsory credits prerequisites and to design academic programs that keep future options open.

Career exploration resources provide students with useful information on job profiles career trends labour market statistics and education requirements. Self-discovery and self-assessment tools are available for students.

University and College visits as well as other local post-secondary fairs create opportunities for dialogue with representatives from a variety of post-secondary options.

The Student Services Resource Library has an excellent collection of planning resources including university and college view books scholarship job information and post-secondary information magazines.

Tutorials on application procedures and time lines for post-secondary options are offered to senior students.

The Grade 10 Career Studies course challenges Rockway students to prepare an education plan detailing an academic program for grades 11 and 12 linked to viable post-secondary options. Students participate in an individually created Job Shadow day to support their exploration of occupational interest. Further this course offers life skills training with units on dealing effectively with change self-awareness and goal setting.

Academic Support

In addition to regular classroom instruction a variety of academic support services are available to students. See Guidance Counselors for more information.

Tutor Information and Coordination
Tutoring services are available from both in-school student tutors and professional tutors for additional cost.

Referrals to Math and Literacy Support Programs
These programs are staffed by teachers and/or qualified Teacher Assistants.

Study Skills
Students receive support in time management effective note-taking test preparation and writing strategies.

Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.)
Students with exceptional learning needs are identified and accommodated with appropriately designed I.E.P’s.

Learning Team Facilitation
Student Services facilitates communication between parents teachers and students to create a positive learning environment.

Resource Room

Rockway’s Resource Room is located in the library. Students come here to receive academic support from a Resource Room Coordinator and two Teaching Assistants on both a timetabled and an occasional basis. Our Resource Room staff works with students on subject assignments organization and effective learning strategies and assists in implementing Individual Education Plans.

Personal Counselling

In keeping with Rockway’s commitment to the integration of academics character and faith Student Services provides students with emotional and social support. Staff are available for students throughout the school day for discussion information and contact with community agencies.

Volunteer and Job Placement Assistance

Rockway upholds the importance of youth actively contributing to the community. A minimum of forty community service hours is required by the Ministry of Education for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students are responsible for obtaining their own volunteer placements and can get information about opportunities from Student Services.

Education and Career Planning

The compact Ontario curriculum has increased the need for students to plan early for options beyond Secondary School: University College Trades & Apprenticeships Academic Upgrading Voluntary Service Christian Colleges Exchange Programs Work or Travel.
